Eynsham Dumpling was one of the 14 varieties developed by Frederick William Wastie, an apple breeder who lived in Eynsham. It was a cross between Blenheim Orange and Sandringham and was received by the National Fruit Trials in 1960.
Eynsham Dumpling is a large cooking apple. The tree is moderately vigorous, upright spreading and bears fruit on spurs. It is self-sterile but benefits from having a pollinator partner from groups 3, 4 or 5. The apples are ready for harvest in early October and can be used
until December.
The apples are yellow, russeted and flushed with copper red on the sun exposed faces. The flesh is white and firm with a sharp, mild flavour. When cooked it makes a mild, lemon yellow sauce.
