Two red apples hanging on a branch with green leaves.

Kidd’s Orange Red is named after James Hutton Kidd, an orchard owner living in New Zealand in the early 20th century who had a passion for raising new varieties. It is a cross between a Cox’s Orange Pippin and Delicious and now a popular garden variety in the UK.

‘Kidd’s Orange Red’ is primarily a sweet dessert apple and is said to be a rival to Cox’s Orange Pippin for flavour and texture.

The trees can grow to 2.5-8m in height and width, depending on the rootstock. The tree is not self-fertile and needs pollinators from Group 3. The apples ripen around mid-October and are best eaten before the New Year.

The skin colour of the apple is yellow but with an extensive orange-red flush. The flesh is light-yellow cream colour and quite dense but pleasantly chewy. The flavour is sweet and honeyed and produces a high quality juice.
